Fire Ants
The red imported fire and is an important turf pest from the Carolinas through Texas. Fire ants establish colonies with honeycomb mounds which contain queens and up to have-a-million worker ants. Unchecked, the mounds can reach from 1 to 2 feet tall. The ants prefer sunny sites and clay soils in which to establish mounds. Fire ant stings are very painful and can lead to infection and allergic reactions. Area applications of insecticide along with individual mound treatments should give acceptable control.
